AccuBraille Brings Thermo-Formed Signs to SFO Terminal 2

SFO13 300x198 AccuBraille Brings Thermo Formed Signs to SFO Terminal 2

We want to chronicle AccuBraille’s work on Terminal 2, a domestic terminal located in San Francisco’s International Airport. In 2010 SFO unveiled its newly Gensler-designed Terminal which serves Virgin America and American Airlines. In addition to the design of the terminal, Gensler also designed the wayfinding program which was based in part on the International Terminal sign program.

SFO121 300x198 AccuBraille Brings Thermo Formed Signs to SFO Terminal 2

With over 700K sq. ft. of interior space T2, as Terminal 2 is often referred to, had great need for an intuitive and well thought-out wayfinding system and eventually Fluoresco, a well known sign fabricator with offices in California, Nevada & Arizona was awarded the fabrication of the project. Fluoresco went looking for the right solution for the ADA portion of the project and they found that using AccuBraille’s Infused ® line of thermo-formed signs would offer them what they needed for this project because of it’s ability to with stand high-traffic and heavy cleaning environments such as airport terminals.  Because the final product is one integrated piece the tactile characters can’t be picked off and the Braille beads will not “pop out”. In addition all AccuBraille signs come with a 5 year warranty and are rated for exterior use.

Given about two weeks to complete this project AccuBraille was able to fabricate and install over 250 unique room identification and code-related signs on time and on-budget. Like any large scale, high-profile project, Turner Construction knew that every aspect of construction would be scrutinized at a granular level but by choosing AccuBraille signs, the architect and general contractor had one less item to concern themselves with, during implementation.

Look For Us At The ISA Show in Orlando

As I sit on a flight heading to Orlando, newISAExLogo 282x300 Look For Us At The ISA Show in Orlando technologies allow me to send messages to old and new friends that we are looking forward to seeing at the ISA show. We couldn’t be more excited about attending the ISA show in Orlando this year.  Mark and I have attended this show many times in the past and we have seen the show grow and become a better venue for innovations in the industry every year.

The ISA does a great job of bringing together so many individuals who are passionate about all facets of the sign industry.  The educational opportunities are only getting better and more relevant to today’s markets. What’s great about the show is that it is a great opportunity for those of us in the industry to come together and see and experience all the new technologies, share ideas and learn about new developments.

Mark and I are very excited to tour all of the exhibits and have some fun with our colleagues.  We look forward to learning new ways that we can integrate Accubraille into all types of ADA designs. If you are
at the show and would like to chat and see where two years of R&D
have taken us, send me a note and we can meet up for a few minutes
during the day or even at the ISA Happy Hour event.

In TalBlog1 300x197 Taleo Case Study2011 Gensler, one of the world’s largest architecture and design firms, began the tenant improvement and expansion work on the Taleo Dublin offices. As part of this effort, the Taleo team recognized the need to upgrade their existing interior signage program and chose AccuBraille as the attractive, cost effective, and timely solution. When asked about the project’s success, Michael McCaughin, Construction Manager at ProPM, said “The signage at Taleo looks fantastic and (AccuBraille) did a great job.”

Tal53 300x276 Taleo Case Study The scope of work for this project was a complete redesign and subsequent implementation of a new interior signage program including all identification and destination signage for new floors. Given the extremely tight construction schedule, the success of this project hinged on AccuBraille’s ability to program, design engineer, and fabricate all signs within a two week period – a task that can typically take 6-8 weeks or longer.

Hello From Sharon Toji “The ADA Sign Lady”

I’ve known about Garnett for years, before Mark bought it. I discovered Garnett because we both had a web site on a start up Website company called Big Step. I admired the choices Garnett had for their hotel clients, and the way they displayed them. I saw them as a medium to high end architectural company, and although I knew that their hotel room signs had braille, I didn’t really know about AccuBraille.

In the past couple of years, as our sister company H Toji and Company started to do more and more school projects in San Francisco and Oakland, I started talking with Mark about some of the installation concerns we had, and I really enjoyed speaking with him. Then, we decided to explore the thermoforming process, and discovered that he was already far along in his R and D on the process. When we came up with some unique ideas for thermoformed signs, he was the best person to turn to.

We’ve developed a great working relationship, and and are introducing two unique kinds of thermoformed ADA signs as a result of our collaboration, ADA/InvisiTouch™ and ADA/PermaSign™. In conjunction with the InvisiTouch™ product, we are designing a unique font that we think people who are touch readers will love. For the first time, the real promise of tactile signs will be fulfilled!

ADA/InvisiTouch™ will be taking full advantage of the two part signs that the new 2010 ADA Design Standards allow. The concept is the brainchild of famed environmental graphic designer Roger Whitehouse of Whitehouse and Company in New York City. We’ll be sending Roger some examples, as soon as we have final samples.

Stay tuned for more, and an explanation of what the two part signs are all about.
